"Welcome Sustenance" - Hannah Cercenis
By Hannah Circenis
"Upon witnessing Colorado’s largest and longest burning fires this past year, I felt my own hypocrisy where my concern for notable climate change hadn’t warranted a willingness to personally respond or act. For years, I’d joked about the self righteousness of vegans, quietly recognizing I wouldn’t choose to sacrifice the comfort and convenience of my diet, or lack thereof. But after weeks of falling ash and eerie dark orange skies, I began to educate myself about the ways I could positively and tangibly impact the environment on an individual basis. Over and over, I found that the result of a single person choosing a vegan diet reduces carbon and emissions substantially, simultaneously conserving vast amounts of water and land. Simply eating the products that the earth offers up from its own ground serves such a large role in restoring the same earth back to health. Now, I’m enjoying my fifth month of a plant-based diet, as well as a closer alignment of my actions and my values. This wreath is a small celebration of my ownership of a vegan lifestyle and an invitation to all others to consider and maybe even enjoy some sustainable change, however that may look. It is a continual “welcome” into the preservation and care of our shared home."
